Colophon, Ancient Greek Word Romanized As Kolophon, Was An Ancient City In Ionia. Founded Around The End Of The 2nd Millennium BCE At The West Coast Of Asia Minor. It Was Likely One Of The Oldest Of The Twelve Cities Of The Ionian League. The City's Name Comes From The Word "Summit", As It Was Sited Along A Ridgeline. The Term Colophony For Rosin Comes From The Term Colophonia Resina, A Resin From The Pine Trees Of Colophon, Which Was Highly Valued For Increasing Friction Of The Bow Hairs Of Stringed Musical Instruments.
The Ancient Greek City Of Kolophon In Ionia Is Best Known In Numismatics For Striking Some Of The Smallest Silver Denominations In Antiquity (e.g., Tetartemorioi). Struck From The 6th To 4th Centuries BCE, Their Signature Coins Feature The Laureate Head Of Apollo On The Obverse And A Lyre, Horse, Or Te Monogram On The Reverse.
The First Coinage Of Kolophon Started Around 530 BCE Consisting Of Only Silver Fractions: Tetartemoria, Hemiobols And Obols, And In Much Less Amount Electron Stater Fractions. All Coinage Depict Apollo On The Obverse And An Incuse Square On The Reverse. Apollo Was Important At Kolophon Since There Was An Greek Sanctuary Dedicated To Apollo At Klarios. // Ancient Numismatics And Collectibles, Ancient Mediterranean History, Iron Age Coinages, Greece, Italy, Antique Bronze Coins, Classic European Antiquities, Small Coins. // Disclaimer: Read The Description And Watch Carefully The Images Provided.
