Ancient Ameca Style, Pre-Columbian Ceramic Figure Statuette. West Mexico, Jalisco PreHispanic Artwork, Dated As Circa 300 BCE To 300 AD. This Female Figure Was Probably One Of A Group Of Similar Ceramic Sculptures Placed In A Jalisco Shaft Tomb. Jalisco Is One Of The Western Mexico States (Colima-Nayarit-Jalisco) From Which Ceramics Of The Period Come, And Its Sculpture Is Noted For A Hieratic Style With Stiff Postures And Staring Eyes. This Female Figure Is A Good Example Of The Style. Her Bodily Proportions—Long Face, Short Arms, Large Torso With Small Breasts, And Minimalist Legs—Were Not Meant To Indicate Deformities But, Rather, Were Accepted Stylistic Conventions. 

Hand Built And Burnished Pottery Figure Shown Seated Nude, The Bent Legs Forming A Tripod Support With Two Rear Projections. The Body Is Compact And Rounded, With Defined Breasts And Emphasized Genitalia. The Head Is Large In Proportion, Framed By A Structured Headdress With Incised Linear Detailing. Facial Features Are Calm And Stylized, With A Nose Ornament And Applied Ear Spools. The Hollow Interior Is Vented By A Large Opening At The Crown.

Cultural Tradition: This Piece Falls Under The Western Mexico Shaft Tomb Tradition (1500 BCE To 400 AD), Ameca Style, And The Emerging Teuchitlan Tradition (300 BCE To 500 AD), Particularly In The North-Central Part Of The State Of Jalisco, Mexico. 

Dimensions, Size: 5.25 X 11.6 X 5 inches, equivalent to 13.3 X 29.5 X 12.7 Cm. All measurements are approximate. Sold as pictured, Surface Wear And Aging.

Provenance: Private Collection Of S. Saunders, Nogales Arizona, USA Collection Before 2000. Currently Private NYC, USA.

Condition: Small loss to headdress band, but otherwise the figure is intact and great condition with mineral and earthen deposits.
