Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast Mexico, Veracruz, Remojadas Type In The Classic period, Dated as circa. 450 to 650 CE (AD). A boldly expressive Remojadas pottery figure, modeled nude and seated with arms and legs spread wide, presenting the body with an unguarded, almost theatrical frankness and in an invitation to a hug (probably a toddler figure).
The face is animated and intensely human, the mouth held open as if speaking, singing, or calling out, with two prominent front teeth that give the visage a distinctive, memorable character. Black bitumen (chapapote) highlights accent the figure with dramatic contrast, marking the arms, legs, and facial details in a way that reads like body paint or ritual ornamentation.
Such figures, produced along the Gulf Coast during the Classic period, are celebrated for their lively individuality and their ability to capture gesture, humor, and presence in fired clay. With its emphatic posture, carefully modeled anatomy, and striking use of black pigmentation, this work stands as a compelling example of Remojadas figural tradition where sculpture becomes both portrait and performance, equal parts ritual object and spirited human caricature.
